Your voice matters in FSE - the colleague engagement survey

01 Apr 2025

To truly understand your experiences and ensure your voice is heard, the University has launched the latest colleague engagement survey.

How your feedback has already made a difference

Your input in previous surveys has led to positive changes across our two Schools. Over the past couple of years, your feedback has driven the following initiatives:

Communication

  • Engagement lunches: Introduced with randomly selected Professional Services and academic colleagues to hear firsthand ideas and thoughts on what works and what doesn’t.
  • School SharePoint site: Developed as a go-to resource for topical and sought-after information.
  • Communications audit: A task and finish group was established in the School of Engineering to improve internal communications. Outputs include a core meetings structure, a School channel guide and mass email guidance to enhance internal communication effectiveness.

Culture and Wellbeing

  • Wellbeing: Wellbeing has become more visible and is now recognised as part of the Health and Safety committee.
  • Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) feedback: Informed School actions, leading to appointments of Heads of EDIA, as well as shaping University-wide strategies and Athena Swan submissions and action plans.

Positive Working Experience

  • Equipment funding rounds: Introduced small and large/capital equipment rounds based on staff feedback.
  • Enhanced induction programmes: The Schools developed a comprehensive induction programme, now adopted across the University.
  • Performance and Development Review (PDR) focus: Enhanced efforts to increase PDR uptake and improve effectiveness by introducing greater flexibility into the process.
  • Recognition and reward: Promotion of the Recognising Excellence and Performance (REP) scheme has led to a healthy rise in submissions, particularly from technical staff.

Survey Details

The survey will be open between Tuesday, 25 March and Tuesday, 22 April. Results will be shared with colleagues and will inform the University’s Manchester 2035 strategy, as well as local plans. You can take the survey here
