Sign up for a Semester 2 LEAP language course today – with reduced fees for university staff!
LEAP (Language Experience for All Programme) is part of the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures and offers university staff the opportunity to study a language course for a reduced fee.
LEAP offers seven introductory language courses at beginners level in semester two only.
The courses aim to develop learners' language competence and cultural knowledge relevant to various aspects of these languages.
In your career and in your personal life, learning a new language provides access to diverse knowledge sources and equips you with a unique blend of experience and transferable skills.
As languages facilitate cross-cultural communication and understanding, learning them fosters critical thinking, empathy, and adaptability. It enriches lives, bridges gaps between communities, and fosters a more inclusive and cohesive world.
Anna Bakhda, Faculty Admissions Officer, recently participated in a British Sign Language course with LEAP. She said:
“Over the past two years I’ve taken Introduction to British Sign Language parts 1 and 2 through LEAP, and would really recommend the programme. As a member of staff, I was able to fit the classes around my working day. The tutor was really engaging, teaching us not only how to have basic conversations in BSL, but also more about Deaf awareness and culture. As the classes were made up of students, staff and members of the public the conversations we had were really varied and our different perspectives enriched our learning. As the parent of a Deaf child, I’d really encourage everyone to learn some BSL, particularly those in student or public facing roles.”
