Professor Elly Cartwright appointed head of centre that works to enrich the postgraduate research experience
Professor Elly Cartwright has been appointed the Director of the Manchester Doctoral College (MDC), which has oversight of all doctoral training and researcher development across our University.
She replaces Associate Vice-President for Research, Professor Melissa Westwood, who will be focusing on the further development of our research culture and environment.
Professor Cartwright, Head of Division of Cardiovascular Sciences and Director of the Manchester British Heart Foundation 4-year PhD Programme, joined the University in 2002, having gained her PhD here in 1995.
She will lead the MDC team as it helps our University to deliver postgraduate research requirements and develop cross-disciplinary, cross-School and cross-Faculty collaboration, thus enriching the postgraduate research experience. The team supports all postgraduate researchers by providing a stimulating research environment and through developing researcher development programmes, funding opportunities and postgraduate-specific facilities.
Professor Cartwright said: “I am excited to take up this new post, helping postgraduate researchers get the best start to their careers at Manchester – as I did when I did my PhD here.
“This stage is the bedrock of your research career, and MDC is here to support you and champion your needs as you continue your journey to make a positive impact on our world.”
Vice-President for Research, Professor Colette Fagan said: “I am delighted to welcome Professor Elly Cartwright to the role of MDC Director, building on her role as Head of Division of Cardiovascular Sciences and academic lead for research staff development in FBMH.”
