Ensuring fire safety on campus

It's important that we are all aware and reminding ourselves of essential fire safety tips to ensure a safe environment for everyone on campus.

Everyone has a collective duty to look after one another and the buildings we use - and being able to identify any potential fire safety issues is key to maintaining safety across our campus.
How to keep our buildings fire safe
Being aware of our surroundings is important, so please also remember to keep the building and everyone safe by:
- Ensuring fire doors are kept closed.
- Keeping corridors, stairwells, and thoroughfare clear so they are not blocked.
- Disposing of items that can spread a fire, e.g. cardboard.
- Checking on food when heating it in the microwave.
- Keeping fire extinguishers at their designated locations.
- Ensuring smoke detectors are never covered up.
If you do notice any fire safety issues, which could be a problem with fire doors, emergency lighting, fire panels, or refuge panels, report them to the Estates Helpdesk immediately. The earlier we spot these
Volunteer to be a Fire Marshal
The University will always welcome staff to be Fire Marshals. The more the better, especially with hybrid working.
