Health and Safety update
28 Feb 2025
As we wrap up February, it's important to highlight some key health and safety points to ensure everyone's well-being on campus.

Fire Evacuation
In the event of a fire alarm sounding outside of the weekly testing time, leave the building immediately via the nearest fire exits. Do not wait to gather your belongings – your safety is the top priority.
Maintaining shared areas
It’s important to ensure we are respecting shared areas, such as offices and kitchen, and keeping them clean and tidy. This includes:
· Washing up as you go: Clean your dishes and utensils immediately after use.
· Putting away crockery and cutlery: Ensure all items are put away each night.
· Disposing of waste properly: Waste should be placed in the correct bins – food waste should only be placed in the dedicated food bins on campus.
· Storing food correctly: Food should only be stored in sealed, airtight containers, including any fruit, teabags, coffee, or sugar. Never store food in drawers if it isn’t in an airtight container.
· Keeping your desk clean: If you eat at your desk, keep it crumb-free and wipe it down after each use.
Reporting
We encourage everyone to report any issues where necessary, as this helps prevent recurrence and keeps everyone safe. This includes:
· Safety Issues: Report all accidents, incidents, and near-misses to prevent recurrence and ensure everyone's safety. You will not be blamed for raising concerns. Use the Accident Incident Reporting Form.
· Hygiene Issues: Any hygiene issues, such as in a kitchen or office space, should be reported directly to House Services on houseservices@manchester.ac.uk.
· Work-Related Ill Health: Contact Occupational Health for any work-related health issues.
· Building Issues: If you notice any building issues (e.g., faulty lights, loose paving stones), report them to the Estates Helpdesk.
· Security Issues: Campus Support & Security is available 24/7 at 0161 30699966 (also found on the back of your University ID card) and via the SafeZone App.
