03 Mar 2025

She will be on secondment as Chief Scientific Advisor for National Security

Professor Danielle George

Professor Dan George is to take up a new role as the new Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA) for National Security from 1 April for three years, while remaining with us for a day a week to work on the Flexible Learning Programme transition and Manchester Online.

The Chief Scientific Advisor plays a crucial role in providing advice and supporting delivery of science and technology (S&T). As a member of the Government Chief Scientific Adviser’s team, the post also provides strategic advice on national security S&T in the government and the wider national security community.

At Manchester, Dan is currently a Professor of Radio Frequency Engineering and Associate Vice-President (AVP) for Blended and Flexible Learning. Her research focuses on solving one the 14 world engineering grand challenges of the 21st century; engineering the tools for scientific discovery and as AVP she has been instrumental in developing and implementing the University’s Flexible Learning Strategy which aims to create the right conditions and support structures to allow us to explore new ways of teaching and learning.

This includes giving students more flexibility over pace, place and pathway of study; developing student and staff digital skills; setting up a new Digital Learning Service to support staff; enhancing our digital infrastructure; and providing spaces on campus where students and staff can innovate and collaborate.

Professor April McMahon, Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students said: “Dan has been an exceptional AVP and has been highly effective in boosting the University’s engagement with and understanding of flexible learning. I am delighted about her new CSA role, which is a great fit for her outstanding abilities – but equally delighted that we will retain an association with her here at Manchester.”

Dan said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be taking on the role of CSA for National Security and see it as a tremendous opportunity to help put solid science advice at the heart of government decision making. I’m also delighted that this new chapter allows me to maintain my connection with the University of Manchester, where I remain committed to delivering engaging and innovative learning experiences through Manchester Online.”
