Manchester Museum and Whitworth Collections launch

10 Feb 2025

You can now get even closer to the world-class collections at Manchester Museum and The Whitworth with just a few clicks.

Both venues have launched a new, online collections search that allows you to lose yourself in incredible stories linked to almost 700,000 objects, including many thousands that aren’t even on display.

This new tool is 10 years in the making and has been developed as part of both venues’ partnership with Manchester Art Gallery.

It means you can dive deeper into the collections each venue cares for, benefitting from information and perspectives that go beyond the interpretation panel. Not only will this benefit researchers looking to use collections to support their work but it will also empower communities, both local and global, to build greater knowledge and understanding.

The collections search allows for the creation of ‘living labels’ that will evolve over time, allowing community knowledge, personal perspectives, opinions and recollections to be included alongside the perspectives’ of curators and researchers.

This means a diverse range of perspectives can help to form a richer narrative around each object and enables a form of equitable cataloguing that brings people together and explores what the collections mean to them.

It is possible to include imagery, video and 3D models with each object, as well as information on past exhibitions objects have been displayed within.
