In a significant step towards achieving the goals outlined in our Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2023-2028, food waste collection facilities have been rolled out to all academic and non-residential buildings on main campus.

Where to find food waste bins

All academic (and non-residential) buildings have food waste caddies in staff kitchens, and we also have food waste bins in a limited number of buildings where the footfall is highest.

The locations of these bins are listed in the 'Food waste bin locations' document.

What happens to the food waste when it's collected?

Our waste contractors, Veolia Limited, collect the food waste and transport it to anaerobic digestion facilities. This process not only treats the food waste, but also produces a "digestate" can can be applied to land. On top of this, the methane generated during this process is used as a fuel to generate electricity.
