Our University achieves Gold award for evidencing excellent practice around LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans) inclusion
Our University has been rated 7th out of 246 employers in the country in the latest Stonewall Top 100 Employers list, which is compiled from the Workplace Equality Index – the UK’s leading benchmarking tool for LGBT+ inclusion in the workplace.
Stonewall is Europe’s largest charity for lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, questioning and ace (LGBTQ+) people and each year ranks organisations for their LGBTQ+ inclusion practices against other organisations.
Our University scored 133 out of 197 in its Workplace Equality Index submission, ranked 7th overall, and also achieved a Gold award for meeting specific criteria around a number of identified measures for LGBT+ inclusion.
We ranked 3rd in the Public Sector, 3rd in the Education sector and 1st amongst employers headquartered in the North West of England.
Our application
Our application evidenced how we are inclusive for LGBT+ staff and students across a range of measures including our policies and benefits; the employee lifecycle; development and empowerment; student engagement and leadership. We’ll be focusing on feedback to ensure we build on this great result and further improve LGBT+ inclusion.
Paul Marks-Jones, Interim Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, who compiled the submission said: “The Stonewall ranking is recognition of how we are ensuring inclusivity in practice for our LGBT+ staff and students. I am immensely proud of the progress we continue to make in this area and maintaining our Top 100 position since 2015.
Although this is a great result and we will celebrate the success and fulfilment of one of our EDI strategic aims, we accept we can do more and we have a way to go especially for the more marginalised and underrepresented LGBTQ+ identities”.
We use benchmarking tools as part of our inclusion performance metrics across different equality groups, and taking part in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index has supported this.
