Professor Colette Fagan Appointed to UKRI Research England Council

Professor Colette Fagan, Vice-President for Research, has been appointed to the UK Research and Innovation Research England Council.
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) plays a pivotal role in shaping the research landscape in the UK. Research England, a council within UKRI, is responsible for funding and engaging with English higher education providers to create and sustain the conditions for a healthy and dynamic research and knowledge exchange system in the higher education sector.
As part of her new role, Colette will support the Council’s responsibilities which include:
- Quality-Related Research (QR) Funding: Supporting Higher Education Providers (HEPs) to deliver excellent research;
- Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF): Promoting high-performance knowledge exchange;
- Delivery of the Research Excellence Framework (REF): Ensuring the rigorous assessment of research quality;
- Delivery of the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF): Enhancing knowledge exchange between academia and society;
- Relationship Management: Collaborating and managing relationships with key higher education bodies and institutions such as JISC and the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement;
- Providing System Intelligence and Insight: Analysing trends and driving future priorities.
Professor Colette Fagan said, “I’m delighted to accept this appointment and to have the opportunity to support Research England to deliver its mission for the benefit of the sector and the UK’s research and innovation ecosystem.”
This part-time appointment will complement, and benefit from, Colette’s role as Vice-President of Research, responsible for leading the University’s research strategy. Colette is also a Professor of Sociology and an elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. Her research expertise lies in employment, working conditions, and job quality, with a particular focus on gender inequalities and international comparative analysis. Her research, has secured impact through influencing policy, including through advisory roles for the European Commission and the International Labour Office of the United Nations. Professor Fagan’s work has been supported by major national and international funders, including the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the European Union’s research framework programs.
