This time of year can feel expensive, but there are lots of free and low cost activities available in Manchester that you and all the family can attend. Below we have highlighted some of the key events to look out for.

Walks

Taking some time over the winter break to explore nature and go for a walk is an excellent low-cost day out. Whether it is a solo walk or a walk with friends or family, there are some fantastic places to discover. Make sure to plan your route first, check the terrain and weather conditions, dress appropriately with the correct footwear and take water with you.

Christmas songs and carols performance, Wednesday, 20 December, 1pm, Whitworth Hall 

Join our Wellbeing and Library choirs for uplifting songs, festive readings and traditional carols for all to sing. 

The Whitworth Art Gallery 

The Whitworth Art Gallery is free and will be closed only on the following days over the festive period: Sunday, 24 December, Monday, 25 December, Tuesday, 26 December and Monday, 1 January 2024. 

Mancherster Museum

The Manchester Museum is free to visit and has lots going on over the festive season including a Make your own free Christmas decoration Saturday 16th December, and exhibitions to visit. Closure days are Sunday 24 December, Monday 25 December, Tuesday 26 December and Monday 1 January. 

Aviva Studios Winter Factory Programme

Aviva Studios Winter Factory Programme: Inspired by their current stage show ‘Lost and Found’, the Winter Factory Programme has a wide range of low cost or completely free family fun activities and workshops. 

Castlefield Viaduct

‘Cosy Corner’, 11 December – 1st January 2024: This December, the visitor building will be transformed into a relaxing spot with books, board games and easy crafts, plus the spectacular views of the wild viaduct and Castlefield below. Visitors are invited to take a break from the rush, settle in with a good read or simply watch nature go by. Also from 3.30pm to 5pm every day, visitors can drop by to wander along the light trail and visit the garden in the sky in a different way. 

The Lowry Gallery 

Julia and Axel Thirty Years of Favourite Stories & LS Lowry Collection, Free Exhibition. Come and see a family-friendly exhibition showcasing the creative magic behind some of the world’s best-loved and best-selling children’s books. 

Manchester Art Gallery 

Manchester Art Gallery has a host of free or low-cost exhibitions and events. 

The Science and Industry Museum is free to enter, or you have the option to make a small donation. They also have a free holiday programme. Find out more here. 

New Year Swap Shop, Thursday January 4th January, 11am – 2pm, The Atrium, University Place

If you have any unwanted holiday gifts, swap your item for another at a New Year Swap Shop or buy an item for £3. All proceeds will go to the cost-of-living support fund and any leftover items will be donated to charity. Items gifted in the past have ranged from socks and glove sets, make-up, games. Books, unopened fancy food and drink items, kitchen and household goods. All staff and students are welcome.
