University Old Quad to be remodelled

Historic section of campus to be redesigned as part of upcoming bicentenary celebration and commitment to sustainability
As part of our ongoing campus development, the University will be investing in the remodelling of the ‘Old Quad’ area of campus, located under the Whitworth Arch and in front of the John Owens building.
The quad, which has remained largely unchanged for the last 70 years, will be remodelled as part of our upcoming Bicentenary celebrations, leaving a lasting physical legacy within the heart of the campus that reflects both this historic milestone and our continued commitment to innovation and sustainability. We hope that this reimagined location will benefit both our staff, students, and the wider community who come to visit, work, and study here for years to come.
The remodelling work will see the removal of the existing tarmac car park and the creation of a high-quality innovative landscape, focused on environmental sustainability, historic integrity, accessibility, and biodiversity. The new design will see the continuation of our commitment to providing additional green spaces and seating across campus, seeking to create a differentiated solution that stands out from other surrounding areas; whilst ensuring the chosen materials and design remain in keeping with the courtyard’s history.
The project, which is being developed and delivered by our Estates and Facilities Directorate, will commence officially in January 2024, with anticipated completion by May 2024. Those who work in and around the location may see hoarding begin to appear over the next few weeks as our contractors start to prepare the site for the new year.
