The University pledges its commitment to the Armed Forces Community

Armed Forces Covenant Signing

The University of Manchester is proud to announce that it has signed the Armed Forces Covenant, a national pledge to support the Armed Forces community.

The signing ceremony took place on Thursday, 19 October and was attended by Patrick Hackett, Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer Secretary, Adèle MacKinlay, Director of People and Organisational Development, Lt Col Graham Rainey, Commanding Officer at The North West Officer Training Regiment, Louisa Blakemore Regional Employer Engagement Director, Brooke Foulgar, People and OD Policy Manager, and Niko Howai, a Research Associate ex Supply Chain Logistician and current Training Officer.

The Covenant aims to encourage local communities to support the service community, promote understanding and awareness among the public issues affecting the Armed Forces community and encourage activities which help to integrate people returning from the Armed Forces into local life. The University will now list all future job vacancies on the Forces Families Job website and will display the Armed Forces Covenant charter mark on our Careers pages.

Adèle MacKinlay, Director of People and Organisational Development, said, ‘Enabling people of all backgrounds to thrive and reach their potential is one our core values at The University of Manchester, so I am delighted that we have signed the Armed Forces Covenant. We are proud to support our Armed Forces Community and recognise the immense contribution that many veterans and their families have made to our country.‘

Lt Col Graham Rainey, Commanding Officer North West Officer Training Regiment, ‘It was an honour to sign the Armed Forces Covenant with The University of Manchester. It’s great to see the University formally recognising the contribution that serving personal, veterans, and their families have made to the North West region.’

Niko Howai, Research Associate for Humanities, said, ‘It’s great to see the University give even further support for the Armed Forces Community by signing the covenant today. Personally, it gives me a great sense of value as a member of the Armed Forces to see this support from the University, and I hope that opens up more opportunities for the Manchester Armed Forces Community.’
