Michael Wood to launch latest book at The Portico Library
01 Nov 2023
‘China’s Greatest Poet: In the Footsteps of Du Fu’ is described as a beautifully illustrated travelogue, chronicling the life and work of one of the world’s greatest poets
On Tuesday, 7 November historian, broadcaster and Professor of Public History Michael Wood launches his latest book at The Portico Library.
A popular historian and a TV regular for over three decades, Michael Wood became a Professor of Public History at our University in 2013.
Originally from Moss Side Manchester, Michael has made well over a hundred highly acclaimed documentary films and is known for his work with community historians across the UK. He is also the author of numerous best-selling history books including In Search of the Dark Ages, Domesday and In Search of Shakespeare.
In his new book, Michael follows in the footsteps of Du Fu (712-70), one of China’s greatest poets, to try and understand the places that inspired some of the most famous and best-loved poetry the world has known. The themes in Du Fu’s work – friendship, family, human suffering – are universal and in our troubled times are just as relevant as they were almost 1,300 years ago.
The event is presented by the Manchester China Institute (MCI) and the Creative Manchester Research Platform. It takes place from 5pm - 6:30pm at The Portico Library and is free to attend.
- Places can be reserved via Eventbrite.
