Purple Wave success at the Great Manchester Run

24 May 2023

Congratulations to our colleagues, students and alumni who took part in the Great Manchester Run on Sunday, 21 May

Great Manchester Run 2023

Europe’s biggest and best 10k race returned to the city at the weekend, with thousands of runners pounding the city’s streets.

Congratulations to all of our 500 10k and 101 half marathon runners! It was an amazing day and wonderful to see our University community join together to create a wonderful environment, with nearly 600 students, staff members, and alumni running, walking, and jogging. Once again making an appearance, Barnabee finished the 10k run in just under an hour! In such a heated suit, it’s no simple task.

Many who took part in the Purple Wave raised funds to support Manchester’s cancer research. Our Purple Wave 2023 fundraising team have been working hard to help deliver life-saving research in Manchester’s brand-new cancer research centre. And they’ve already exceeded their collective fundraising target of £15,000. There’s still time to support the team by visiting our Purple Wave JustGiving page. Every pound raised will bring new hope to millions living with cancer around the world.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped in the run-up to the Purple Wave as well as on the day.

Whether you took part in the events as a personal challenge, raised money for charity, or returned to Manchester to run as alumni, we would love to hear from you! If you would like to share your story, just email us at purplewave@manchester.ac.uk.

If you were involved and are already excited for next year’s event, or if you did not manage to enter but want to get in on the action, you can now register your interest for next year’s PurpleWave which will be taking place on Sunday, 26 May 2024.

You can find your official results and photos on the Great Run website or check out some more photos on the UoM Sport website.
