Update on student accommodation capacity issues in Manchester

As you will be aware from our update last week, our student accommodation is oversubscribed. We have made strenuous efforts to find suitable alternative options in Manchester, however this has proved exceptionally challenging this year. 

Current situation  

A number of students took up the financial incentive of £2,500 to cancel their booked accommodation and in addition to this we have had students declining the accommodation offer we have made. This has enabled us to allocate over 100 rooms in Manchester in the last five days alone and through a variety of other mitigations around 300 additional students have been found rooms in Manchester.

The remaining students (around 130 out of nearly 8000) have received an offer for accommodation in Liverpool, along with £100 per week to cover travel expenses.They will also be eligible for free parking on campus. 

We very much hope to be able to offer students who fall under our accommodation guarantee the option to move back to Manchester. We will be reopening our Wright Robinson halls of residence. The work to get the accommodation ready is being progressed as quickly as possible, but it will take two to three months to complete. In addition to this, throughout the first semester there are always a number of rooms which become available. Should a student accept a subsequent offer from us to move to Manchester from Liverpool we will provide £200 towards moving costs. 

Other options 

All students who are being offered accommodation in Liverpool are still eligible for the financial incentive of £2,500 if the withdraw their application. Alternatively, they may consider deferral, subject to agreement by their school. These options are detailed on our FAQs page.
