More than 800 colleagues help uncover our University values

Earlier in the summer colleagues were invited to get involved in some work to shape our University’s values - which will sit at the heart of our new strategic plan. 

More than 750 colleagues took part by sharing their stories and experiences, as well as giving feedback on the University’s existing values. 

In September around 55 colleagues representing all parts of our University came together at a workshop to review the findings of this work and begin to draft Our Values. Researchers, teaching staff, Professional Services colleagues and academics with a diverse range of experiences, perspectives and disciplines were all represented on the day.

This was no mean feat as 115,799 words from stories and Staff Survey 2019 feedback had been analysed and there were more than 500 pieces of feedback on our existing values.

Patrick Hackett who as Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer is leading this work said: “The workshop was an insightful session which led to some stimulating discussion – thank you to everyone who came along.  We’re now using the outcomes from these discussions to help shape our University values and will keep you updated on our progress. 

“Developing our value statements is just the tip of a very large iceberg and we will be sure to keep you up to date with further opportunities to get involved in shaping and embedding our values work.”

Outcomes from the workshop have now been considered by the University’s Senior Leadership Team and draft values are currently being shared with key University governance and management groups including Senate and the Board of Governors.  The values will form part of the strategic plan which will be launched early in 2020.

This work follows on from feedback from Our Future where colleagues said they wanted to talk more about our culture, values and a sense of ‘Manchesterness’.
