The Research Services Team has launched its Open Access monograph competition 2023/24, which closes on Friday, 26 January 2024. Unfunded monograph authors from any University faculty can enter the competition, as long as they will soon be publishing a monograph or published one on or after 1 October 2022. Eligible entries from last year’s competition can reapply.

Entries will be judged by a representative panel led by Neil Humphrey, Associate Dean for Research in Humanities. Winners will receive funding from the Library to make their monograph open access, meaning anyone can access and read their research for free. At least one entry will be chosen from each School and the Library’s Research Services Team will contact successful applicants in early April 2024.

The OA Monograph competition was set up to help researchers publishing long-form outputs to make their work open access. While researchers wanting to publish journal articles open access potentially have access to multiple funding streams, funding for OA monographs has been historically been comparatively limited.

Since the competition started in the 2019/20 academic year, Research Services has published 19 monographs. You can go to Library 2022/23 Open Access monograph competition: winning entries for details of the winners of last year’s competition.

To enter, authors need to submit a paragraph of no more than 300 words explaining why their research will benefit from OA publication to uml.openaccess@manchester.ac.uk by Friday, 26 January 2024. They also need to include details of their publisher and their proposed or actual date of publication.

Questions about the competition should be directed to uml.openaccess@manchester.ac.uk
