New staff spaces in Crawford House

13 Jul 2022

With the closure of the Sackville Street Building and the loss of a significant amount of staff space at Joule Library we have been working with colleagues in Estates to develop some new staff spaces in Crawford House.

Crawford House (see no. 31 on the campus map. Some staff will know this as the old Precinct Library) will provide a studio for the Collection Care Team and also offer a new hybrid workspace for use by all Library staff.

Collection Care will be housed on the lower floor, and on the upper floor we will have a bookable ‘collaboration space’ furnished to support team work together days, staff workshops and meetings. We plan to equip this space with a flexible mix of furniture including:

  • Workstations - approx. 25
  • Soft seating for breakouts and online meetings
  • Large meeting table and screen

In addition to this there will be an open space providing:

  • 30 workstations
  • Soft seating for breakouts and online meetings
  • 1-2-1 meeting rooms (x2)
  • Large meeting room accommodating up to 10 people
  • Staff room and kitchen

A contractor is being appointed to work on redeveloping both spaces over the summer and we are currently expecting to have the shared staff space available for use by the end of October.

Collection Care will move in early October so the studio will be closed for at least three weeks and materials and sorting of equipment will take place in November. Therefore Collection Care will be unable to make boxes for books from mid-September until December.

Due to the need to move a number of items of furniture as well as IT equipment across from Joule to Crawford House before we can open, the staff spaces at Joule will be closed for use after Friday, 16 September. Until then please note that because Sackville Street Building is no longer in use by other areas of the University, you will be required to follow the lone working procedure (see Joule Risk Assessment in the 8 July all staff email from Ciaran Pook for details).

We will keep you posted on progress and provide an update on opening dates in due course. If you have any questions in the meantime please contact either Olivia Walsby (general enquiries) or Elisabeth Carr (Collection Care).
