Unprecedented levels of demand for Kanopy streaming service

04 May 2020

The Collection Development and Reading Lists teams are working to manage demand

The Library offers a number of video streaming services, including Digitalia (world cinema but mainly Europe & the Americas), Asian Film Online from ProQuest, and of course Kanopy. The first two are paid for by annual subscription, but the Kanopy offer is based on a patron-driven acquisition model (PDA) which has offered us great value in the past. But this year it became a victim of its own success with unprecedented levels of demand.

The move off-campus has of course generated more demand for digital resources, so Collection Development and the Reading Lists team are working together on a new way of managing demand which both saves money and permits more engagement with online reading lists. You may have had enquiries about this! We are now mediating requests for Kanopy films individually, which gives us a chance both to identify any existing content and to liaise with academics about getting their recommended teaching material online.

Please direct any enquiries you have to the Reading Lists team
