Faculty celebrates success in THE global subject rankings
24 Jan 2025
The Faculty of Humanities’ and University’s commitment to academic excellence in research and teaching has been recognised in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject for 2025.
The subject areas taught across the Faculty have all ranked in the top 100 worldwide in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by subject for 2025, revealed on Tuesday, 22 January.
Five of the 11 subject areas assessed by THE are taught in our four Schools, with all of them scoring well in this year’s subject rankings.
Business and Economics ranked 32nd, Social Sciences was placed 37th, Arts and Humanities appeared at joint 43rd in the table, Law ranked equal 78th and Education Studies was placed 84th.
The University also featured in the top 100 globally for the remaining six subject areas evaluated, an achievement shared by only seven other UK institutions. The strongest performing subject area across the University as a whole was Business and Economics, taught across AMBS and SoSS.
Professor Fiona Devine, Faculty Vice-President and Dean, said: “I am delighted that our Faculty’s outstanding teaching and research has been acknowledged across our full range of disciplines in these subject rankings. They are testament to the hard work and diligence of our colleagues. It is now important for us to continue to look forward and work collaboratively with one another to keep making improvements.”
The THE ranking uses key performance indicators to measure five core pillars of evaluation: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry partnerships and international outlook.
These prestigious rankings are one of three major international subject ranking exercises that the University tracks to benchmark its performance, the others being the QS World University Rankings by Subject and the Shanghai Rankings’ Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
