Academic Promotion Workshop for Global Majority/Racially Minoritised Academic colleagues
18 Oct 2024
On 12 September the Faculty of Humanities hosted an Academic Promotion Workshop for Global Majority/Racially Minoritised Academic colleagues.
The session was well attended, with 25 colleagues joining in person and 47 online.
The workshop consisted of a P&OD presentation on the application process, a presentation on preparing for promotion and tips for application from Professor Paul Mativenga from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and a panel of Humanities colleagues reflecting on their personal experiences of applying for promotions.
Laura Winter, Director for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Environment, Education and Development said “The workshop was an important part of our faculty and University aims to become an anti-racist organisation, by supporting and encouraging academic colleagues to apply for academic promotion. It was amazing to see the excellent attendance, and the important contributions. In addition to the targeted promotions workshops, EDI teams in all schools in the faculty will also be working hard to make other changes locally to improve equity for all staff.”
The Faculty is committed to supporting the development and progression of academic and research staff from ethnic minority backgrounds, in line with the University's REC Achievement Plan. The plan was developed as part of Manchester's successful Silver Race Equality Charter award application in 2023 and outlines the University's ambitious commitments to progress race equality at pace.
The Faculty now plans to build on this session by arranging dedicated promotion workshops for academic women and disabled colleagues in 2025.
The feedback form for the workshop is still open and the Humanities EDI team would welcome the reflections of anyone who attended the workshop to help with their future planning.
