Honoring a Legacy: Cathie Marsh Institute Celebrates 30 years of social research excellence.

In November 2023, under the new leadership of Professor Ed Fieldhouse, a Professor of Politics in SoSS, the Cathie Marsh Institute commemorated the 30th anniversary of Cathie Marsh’s death with a celebration of her enduring legacy. Attendees enjoyed a programme showcasing the internationally important substantive and methodological research being carried out at the Institute, including a reflection on Cathie’s contributions to the field of social research. The one-day conference served not just as a platform for showcasing cutting-edge work, but also as a testament to the lasting impact of her vision and dedication.

Throughout the day a line-up of speakers from SoSS joined Professor Fieldhouse to offer thought-provoking perspectives on the current state of social research. They included: James Nazroo, Emeritus Professor of Sociology; Mark Elliot, a Professor of Data Science; Natalie Shlomo, a Professor of Social Statistics; Rachel Gibson, Professor of Political Science; and Jackie Carter, Professor in Statistical Literacy. They were also joined by Alex Bogdan, Research Director at the Ipsos UK Social Research Institute.

Their presentations not only showcased the breadth and depth of research being conducted at the CMI, but also served as a reminder of the diverse voices driving innovation in the field. In a world facing complex social challenges, Marsh's pioneering work serves to inspire future generations of researchers to push the boundaries of knowledge and affect meaningful change.
