Find out more about the Teaching Academy

07 Mar 2024

The Teaching Academy aims to create a culture of innovation and inclusivity within the teaching and learning environment

It will achieve this by supporting our colleagues and ensuring they have access to Continued Professional Development (CPD) to be innovative, resulting in our teaching being recognised as world leading.

The segment is co-led by Andy Weightman (Professor of Medical Mechatronics and Associate Dean for Teaching Academy) and Dan Jagger (Faculty eLearning Manager) with membership of the segment leadership team also including Akilu Yunusa-Kaltungo and Rob Appleby (School Heads of Education) and Carly Peesapati and Steve Olivier (School Heads of Teaching, Learning and Student Experience).

Having recently worked with their communities to create a five year strategy, the Teaching Academy will focus on realising the following objectives:

  • Creating a positive culture towards CPD for teaching and learning professionals
  • Building a portfolio of CPD courses that inspires and motivates teaching staff
  • Ensuring colleagues have access to teaching and learning resources and updates and receive the skills and training necessary to make the best out of our physical and virtual teaching spaces and tools
  • Working in partnership with staff and students to provide holistic and effective academic support systems for students of all backgrounds
  • Encouraging and supporting a culture of technical and pedagogical innovation
  • Championing staff awards and good practice
  • Developing methods to identify effective teaching practice
  • Promoting cross-University examples of good teaching practice

There are a number of milestones that will help the segment leadership team review progress, including:

Year 1

Promoting case studies demonstrating good practice across the Faculty

Identifying, planning and resourcing the pathway for future NAP programmes

Year 2

Supporting the transition to the new Central Learning Environment (CLE) with high quality materials and resources

Years 3 - 5

Continuing to support the new CLE in its initial years, promoting best practice case studies and resources

Developing the portfolio of CPD programs for all academic staff
