Interview with Michelle Carter: new EDI Lead for AMBS
09 Jun 2023
This week, we caught up with Michelle Carter, Professor of Information Systems (MSM) about her new role as EDI Lead for AMBS.
Michelle joined the business school last year and will take up her new EDI responsibilities in August, working alongside Hongwei He on all things SR. Michelle is excited to be learning the EDI ropes between now and August.
As Michelle is still relatively new to the business school, she sees this as a great opportunity to look at EDI with a fresh pair of eyes and with no preconceptions.
One of Michelle’s first big tasks is leading on our Athena Swan submission. The Athena Swan Charter recognises and celebrates good practice towards the advancement of gender equality: representation, progression and success for all.
Currently, AMBS holds a Bronze award for Athena Swan, which was awarded in 2018 and now it’s time to apply again, so Michelle will be leading on that for AMBS. A big part of this application is information gathering and self-assessment (not the tax variety!) and Michelle would like everyone to help and get excited about this process for Athena Swan. So, look out for more on this soon!
Another of Michelle’s big passions is social justice and she is adamant that EDI is not a tick box exercise but is very much about honesty and transparency of our actions. Without this approach, we cannot challenge and change the way we do things for the better. We quite agree!
