SBS Health and Safety – Lone working arrangements – further guidance
28 Apr 2017
There have been recent incidents reported in the University that had the potential for serious consequences where inadequate lone working arrangements were found to be a significant contributory factor.
It is University policy to avoid lone working wherever possible however it is recognised that you may need to do so. It is strongly recommended that lone working that involves the use of hazardous equipment, substances or activities, does not occur out of hours, unless absolutely necessary. In any event, there must be robust risk assessment and control measures in place to minimise the risk of harm to the individual or premises for the duration of the lone working.
Lone working must be risk assessed and safe systems and methods of work must be put in place to reduce the risk.
Before lone working you must:
- Have permission from you line manager or academic supervisor
- Prepare a personal lone working risk assessment and have it authorised by your line manager or academic supervisor
- Complete the On Campus Lone Working check list
- Ensure you are aware of your local building access policy
- Be familiar with the University Lone Working Arrangements
- Have arrangements in place for personal security e.g. walking to the car late at night.
There are also certain activities that are not permitted out of hours. Refer to the Safety Services guidance for further information.
It must be noted that certain categories of people who must not lone work e.g. those with certain health conditions, undergraduates, visitors, new and inexperienced members of staff or students and expectant mothers.
