16 Oct 2023

The screening will take place in the Martin Harris Centre’s John Casken Theatre on 25 October, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session

Vale? Is It Worth it?

Join us on from 12pm-2.30pm for the UK premiere of the documentary 'Vale? Is It Worth It? Five artists in the front line against Brazil’s worst environmental crime'.

Lunch will be served in the building foyer at 12pm, before the screening.

The event will be chaired by Dr Leandro Valiati of the Institute for Cultural Practices and director Paul Heritage will be on the panel.

Through music, poetry and circus performances, five Brazilian artists talk about their grief, fears and hope four years after the Brumadinho Dam collapse, which killed 300 people.

The documentary (30 minutes), directed by Paul Heritage and Marcelo Barbosa (Indianara, 2019) focuses on the impact of the collapse on the artistic and cultural heritage of this rich mining region in Brazil.

The documentary was produced by People's Palace Projects as a result of an international research project Roots of Resilience by People’s Palace Projects/Queen Mary University of London and University of Manchester. The study mapped the value of tangible and intangible heritage of the Iron Quadrangle in Brazil in partnership with five local artistic organisations directly impacted by mining activity.

This event is presented by the Creative Manchester Research Platform. It is free to attend and all are welcome.
