Dr Stacey McKnight (Lecturer) and Dr Doron Cohen (Senior Lecturer) (School of Health Sciences)

Stacey and Doron’s submission detailed how they increased representation on their Social Psychology and Group Dynamics course after students raised concerns that the programme failed to reflect their lived experiences. They challenge students to think about their own unconscious biases and explore emerging research into real-world problems such as racism and homophobia. They have collaborated with local LGBTQ+ charity, The Proud Trust, to ensure they capture the voices of the marginalised when integrating issues about sexuality and gender into the curriculum. This led to the creation of bespoke summer internship programme where they worked in partnership with students to conduct research into intersectionality, labour market discrimination and student perceptions of emerging gender labels.

Their work has had a positive impact on student sense of belonging, satisfaction and inclusion for both majority and minority students. Stacey and Doron have extremely high unit evaluation scores (4.91/5) and have won several student-led teaching awards including: Students Union Awards for 21st Century Curriculum Creator (2018), Embedding Diversity into the Curriculum (2021, 2022) and Dr Doron Cohen’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award (2022).

Stacey and Doron have been disseminating their good practice, co-delivering a Pedagogy Development Programme Masterclass on LGBTQ+ Inclusivity in the Curriculum and also via the TEA: Teach, Explore, Apply blog.
