Michael Smith (School of Biological Sciences)
Michael Smith’s Teaching Excellence Award submission highlighted his innovative contributions to “Flexible Learning & Digital Discovery” and “Assessment and Feedback.” By designing weekly “Mentimeter Active Learning Sessions” for his 200-student course unit, Introduction to Cancer, Michael transformed the traditional lecture experience into an interactive and engaging environment that supports flexible learning and fosters interactivity and inclusivity. Furthermore, he led the digital delivery process for the pedagogical transformation of the medical programme, positively impacting 440 students this year alone and training dozens of staff members on digital delivery methods. Meanwhile, his TBL-based assessment in “Introduction to Cancer” significantly improved student engagement and reduced assessment anxiety, with 93.9% preferring it over traditional methods. Michael’s innovations have enhanced the overall educational experience and are positively influenced teaching practices across the faculty.
