Dr Mark Quinn (Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering)

Mark was nominated by his colleagues who believein recognition of his educational leadership is demonstrated through the example he sets. His teaching on the MSc Experimental Methods unit is taken by several hundred students across 5 MSc programmes within the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE). He took on the challenge of making the unit feel relevant to students from different subjects by using industrially inspired live demonstrations of technology in his lectures. This helped to develop curiosity and motivate his students to engage with the material. The unit is essential in developing the students’ sense of belonging when they first start their MSc programme.

Mark adapted his course to digital delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic and despite the unit previously being hands-on he maintained strong UEQ scores and student feedback. He is respected by his students as he encourages them to take ownership of their programme in Student Staff Liaison Committees and focus groups to improve their programme. What makes Mark’s practice truly excellent is the way in which hHis leadership inspires his colleagues, to whom he offers seek guidance into developing their own units. and HhHe is willing to share both not averse to discussing the successes and failures of his classroom experiments, to the wider benefit of the teaching and learning experience.
