Recognised as one of the UK’s learning female data science professionals and having won a National Teaching Fellowship in 2020 for developing the Q-step programme at the University of Manchester, Professor Jackie Carter has continued to work tirelessly towards equality in data science. The Q-Step programme combines partnerships with a plethora of progressive charity and public sector institutions to support its participants in gaining data-Driven and research-led living wage work placements.

This approach tackles inequalities at the source, and has helped around 300 undergraduate students, 70% of whom are female, and 25% from under-represented groups. She has been recognised internationally for her work in this area, with publications engaging with her work across the globe. Her approach has focused on creating a direct link and pathway between the classroom and the workplace, ensuring that students are prepared for stepping into a career upon leaving the University.
