Dr Anne M. Hyland (School of Arts, Languages, and Cultures)

Anne's Teaching Excellence Award nomination showed her to be a dedicated and versatile teacher who has had a significant transformative impact on the teaching of music analysis at the University of Manchester. Her passion for her subject and zeal to build partnerships between staff and students is evident in her extracurricular innovations, such as the establishment of the Manchester Music Theory and Analysis (MMTA) Reading Group; the launch of writing workshops for undergraduates and in her international collaborations with leading international music theorists which bring students into direct contact with new and relevant research initiatives. Another crucial part of Anne’s work has been fostering inclusive education by promoting musical literacy by the redesigning of the first-year curriculum to make it more accessible to a wide range of students.
