Pathways within a programme

Pathways are approved, structured routes through a programme which allow specialisation within the overall aims and intended learning outcomes of that programme.  Pathways can be embedded within the existing programme title or can be identified in the programme title as BA/BSc/MA/MSc in Programme Title (Pathway Title).

Your Faculty Quality Administrator and Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning will be able to advise you on the best option for your proposal.  It is important to be clear on the structure as this will be reflected in the programme and plan set up on Campus Solutions.

Either way, the approval of pathways will allow these routes to be highlighted within marketing material to benefit recruitment.

Any programme with pathways should have some generic aims and intended learning outcomes which apply to all pathways but in addition there should normally be some recognition of any aims or intended learning outcomes that are specific to each pathway.  This could be through recognition of variations within the generic statements or through explicit aims and intended learning outcomes for each pathway.

There should be commonality across pathways within a programme through either one or a number of common subject-based units.  The pathway specialism should normally constitute at least one third of the programme credits and should include the dissertation/project element, if appropriate.  This can involve units that are compulsory for the pathway but available as options for students taking other pathways or programmes.  For PGT programmes, the distinct pathway requirements should be reflected in the dissertation and at least one taught unit.
