E. Acting upon continued unauthorised absence and non-engagement with the programme
1. Schools must have a procedure by which they follow up on continued unauthorised absence and non-engagement with the programme. This must be clearly stated in programme information for students.
For students on cross-School programmes, this will be the responsibility of the School with which they are registered.
2. The Policy on Recording and Monitoring Student Attendance and Engagement states that formal written warnings should be issued to students whose attendance has been deemed unsatisfactory. However, it is good practice to provide informal warnings of unauthorised absence at an earlier stage in order that students can be made aware of the consequences of continued non-attendance or non-engagement.
3. Any informal procedure must be followed by formal procedures in accordance with The Policy on Recording and Monitoring Student Attendance and Engagement if unauthorised absence continues or there is no response to the informal process.
4. The University has a responsibility to UK Visas and Immigration to monitor the attendance and engagement of students that it has issued with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) which has been subsequently been used to obtain a student visa. Reporting to the UKVI is required in cases where a student visa holder does not engage actively and consistently with their programme and intervention by the student’s School has failed to effect re-engagement within 60 days, except in the most exceptional circumstances.
