April 2022 TLD Bulletin

1.   New team update

As from March 2022, the Academic Development and Policy (ADP) team has become part of the new Teaching and Learning Delivery (TLD) team in the Division for Students and Academic Services (SAS), part of the University's Directorate for the Student Experience. The TLD team includes the areas of:

  • Programme Enhancement (Quality Framework and student voice data)
  • Policy and Degree Apprenticeships
  • Appeals, Complaints and Academic Malpractice (Review)
  • Scheduling (timetabling and examinations)

As a result of these updates, the former ADP Bulletin has been combined into the new SAS Newsletter, which is circulated to members of the Division of SAS staff. However, the content of each edition of the new TLD Newsletter will be shared on this website, and circulated by email to the mailing list, particularly for staff members who are not members of the Directorate for Students and Academic Services, or who are colleagues from collaborative/validated Partner institutions.

2.   Programme Enhancement (Quality Framework and student voice data)

  • Student Surveys

Please see details of current and forthcoming teaching and learning surveys summarised below:

  • NSS – The University’s campaign to encourage students to complete the National Student Survey (NSS) 2022 launched Monday 7th February and will close on Saturday 30th April. All students who are eligible to take part in the NSS should now have received an email from Ipsos MORI, who are running the survey on behalf of the Office for Students (OfS). This year, in recognition of the current additional pressures on colleagues, there is no requirement for Schools to promote the survey, although they are welcome to do so if they wish.
  • Semester 2 Unit Surveys 2022 – Unit Surveys will launch on 4th April and will close on 15th May. As was the case in semester 1, core questions have been approved by the Teaching and Learning Strategy Group (TLSG) and have been shared with Unit Survey contacts, along with the usual invitation to add any local questions.

3.    Appeals, Complaints and Academic Malpractice (Review)

  • Regulation XIX: Academic Appeals Procedure

The recent consultation on proposed updates to the Procedure has now ended and results are being collated, with the intention being to introduce an updated Regulation for the 2022/23 academic year.

  • Update on recent cases

This month has seen an increase in the number of students taking cases to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIA). However, the majority of complaints to the OIA continue to be found Not Justified.

  • Disciplinary appeals

Schools/Departments are asked to use the model wording in disciplinary outcome letters. They are also asked to ensure that they update their template SDP outcome letters for disciplinary appeals to reflect the correct timescale for appeal (10 working days). At present, some Schools’ templates state the timescale as being 20 working days or 15 working days or other variations and it is vital that all students across the institution are provided with a consistent message with the same deadline given.
