A stepped care model is an evidence-based clinical model which helps to match the appropriate level of support to the current level of need.
At the University we have two versions of our stepped care model - one for staff (who are supporting students) and one for students to self-identify their support needs (this is known as the support wheel). Although they look quite different, the models do exactly the same thing and are based on the same principles (you'll notice that there are five stages in each model and they share the same colours!).
Before exploring the models in more detail, it is important that all staff are aware of our responsibility to students who share that they have a disability or longer-term health condition.
Supporting students
This training is about supporting students’ wellbeing, and focuses on that initial point of contact with a student in need, whether they have come to you, you are contacting them, or you are having a scheduled meeting. It is aimed at all staff who encounter students day-to-day and may need to take on a supportive role. We’ll help you to work out when and how you can help, sometimes just by listening, and when to signpost on to others at the University, and who those people are.

Understanding your role in the Stepped Care Model and Six Ways to Wellbeing
It will help you understand more about the University's Stepped Care Model and how to provide support to students at steps one and two.
It will also help you to learn more about the University's conceptualisation of mental health and wellbeing and its proactive approach to wellbeing through the evidence-based Six Ways to Wellbeing framework.
This course is for staff and students so they will feel more aware of what consent is and how consent applies to their lives and relationships. Users will also have more awareness of the support that is available at The University of Manchester and in the city of Manchester.
Face-to-face training for staff
Please view the Counselling & Mental Health Service staff training page. Please note that some online training needs to be completed as a prerequiste before booking face-to-face training.
Six Ways to Wellbeing
The Six Ways to Wellbeing is the University's framework for looking after ourselves proactively. More information about this model can be found on our student support website and in the online training listed higher up on this page.
There are ready-made resources for students in our student resources section however, if you would like to create your own materials, the toolkit is available on the University brand visual identity page. Please ensure that you follow these guidelines to ensure consistency across the University.
If you'd like to run your own event related to wellbeing, example of previous activities can be found here.
Feel free to get in touch with the student support team (studentsupport@manchester.ac.uk) if you have any questions about the Six Ways.
