Monthly essentials - December

A central repository from the Student Wellbeing team of collateral, copy and content for you to use via your own communication channels or to help you to run your own activities.

Where specific dates are mentioned, please stick to these so that we're all on message at the same time.

Our comms plan can be found here if you'd like to get a sense of upcoming themes and activities. Please note, due to the fluidity of the current situation, this may be subject to change.

Six ways to wellbeing - Give (all month)

This month's way to wellbeing spotlight is on Give.

We'll be producing material to support and promote Give, alongside focusing on a different, salient wellbeing topic each week. Please visit the other items in this menu for more details.

Don't forget, if you want to plan your own activity and need inspiration, examples of previous events can be found here. As face to face activities aren't possible during the current situation, we'd love to hear from you with alternative suggestions. Please send these to studentsupport@manchester.ac.uk.

Resources

You can find ready-made resources here or, if you want to create your own, visit the University's brandsite for the assets you'll need (you'll need to scroll down a little to get to them!).

If creating your own, you’ll need to buy InDesign (in Adobe Creative Cloud) from the University's Electronic Software Delivery system.

You should also ask IT to install the University fonts, they can do this simply for you here.

Wellbeing Wednesdays (every Wednesday in December)

Every Wednesday the Wellbeing Team will be promoting positive wellbeing to encourage students to take care of themselves during these uncertain times.

We'll be handpicking different events and activites students can take part in throughout the day at home - from mindfulness sessions to exercise classes.

This will be promoted through our instagram page @uomwellbeing and on our student support website. You can find a clickable PDF schedule for the day here, this will be updated every Tuesday. Further assets for social media can be found below.

If you'd like to run your own activities to promote positive wellbeing and need some inspiration, take a look at this event ideas page. Due to the current situation, we know that face to face activities won't be possible so if you have any suggestions for alternative events, we'd love to hear from you: studentsupport@manchester.ac.uk

Remember to use the hashtag #uomwellbeingwednesdays in any social media posts!

Giving Tuesday (w/c 30th November)

Giving Tuesday takes place on the 1st of December. As part of our Giving campaign, we have launched an initiative called 'Keep Manchester Warm and Fed.' This is an easy way for students to give back to local community. We have created Instagram graphics and posters for you to share on any relevant platforms. Giving has been proven to make you feel happier, lowers stress levels, increases self-esteem and promotes social connection, so please share to let students know how they get involved.

Assessment Support (w/c 7th December)

There is no doubt that this has been a challenging and tumultuous time for many students and so as exam season approaches, we want to share the Assessment Support (previously Exam Extra) that will be running between the 7 Dec - 29 Jan from the library, as well as new content from ourselves including this webpage on assessment support and this resource about managing rest and revision at Christmas.

SU Covid-19 mental health campaign (week 1 - services) (w/c 7th December)

The Students’ Union are also launching a campaign to promote the Wellbeing Services that are available for you to access. Be sure to follow them on Instagram @manchester_su to keep up to date with the campaign. You can read their most recent blogpost on Mental Health Services, by clicking here.

Looking after yourself as a BAME student online (w/c 14th December)

The Wellbeing Team's BAME Assistant, Hope, has created a resource discussing how to manage your wellbeing as a BAME student encountering media content of racism and discrimination online. In this time of digital saturation, this resource offers suggestions on self-care and support specific to those in BAME communities. If you have any questions or want more information about the work the Wellbeing Assistant is doing, feel free to email: hope.leslie@manchester.ac.uk

Looking after your digital wellbeing (Assessment Support) (w/c 14th December)

Being aware of how we use technology and how its use can affect us has never been more important in terms of studying and living sustainably.  Digital wellbeing is one of the six digital capabilities , defined by Jisc, that ‘equip someone to live, learn and work in a digital society'. If you're interested in exploring and reflecting on your digital wellbeing as January assessments approach, you can access a new learning resource from My Learning Essentials on 'Looking after your digital wellbeing'.

SU Covid-19 mental health campaign (week 2 - making connections) (w/c 14th December)

The Manchester Students’ Union are still running their campaign, promoting the Wellbeing Services that are available for students to access. Be sure to follow them on Instagram @manchester_su to keep up to date!

Revision and rest (w/c 21st December)

The Christmas break is a period where workloads may increase for students as January deadlines and assessments loom. Nevertheless, it’s very important that students take time to rest and relax over the break. This is key to look after their wellbeing and avoid burnout. For managing workload and wellbeing over the break, we have created a range of resources: Revision and Rest, Looking after wellbeing at home, Revision wellbeing planner , Wellbeing ideas calendar. For staying cosy while you rest, why not embrace the Scandinavian concept of Hygge too.
