Fire Safety

Fire procedure

  • You should familiarise yourself with the main escape route from the building and find any alternative routes should the main escape route be impassable.
  • If you hear the alarm (continuous siren) leave the building as quickly as possible by the nearest available exit. Do not use the lifts.
  • Do not enter a building while the alarm is sounding, and following evacuation, do not re-enter until a senior Fire Officer or Fire Evacuation Marshall gives permission. If you discover a fire, do not delay in sounding the alarm.
  • Fire alarms are located on each corridor and are operated by breaking the glass in the red contact boxes which are usually located at the end and mid points of the main corridors.

Note that the Fire Alarms are tested at the following times and you do not have to evacuate the building for this test.

  • Samuel Alexander Building- Every Thursday at 12:50pm
  • Martin Harris Centre- Every Wednesday 09:45am
  • Ellen Wilkinson Building- Every Wednesday at 11:30am
  • Mansfield Cooper Building- Every Thursday at 08:30am
  • 180 Waterloo Place (The Confucius Institute)- Every Monday at 09:15am

Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs)

The Disability Advisory and Support Service (DASS) will identify students and members of staff that may need to have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP), the School Safety Advisers will then be responsible for working with the identified student or staff member produce a plan where required. If an individual states that they do not require a PEEP, the School will respect their decision and this can be changed in the future at the individual's discretion.
