Estates, buildings and rooms

The staff of the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures (SALC) are located in five different buildings as shown on the campus guide:

The Samuel Alexander Building (number 67 on the campus guide), the Ellen Wilkinson Building (number 77 on the campus guide), the Mansfield Cooper Building (number 65 on the campus guide), 180 Waterloo Place (number 38 on the campus guide),  and the Martin Harris Centre (number 42 on the campus guide).

Out of hours building access to Samuel Alexander Building, Ellen Wilkinson Building, Mansfield Cooper Building and Martin Harris Centre is via swipe card system (University ID card).

Individual office keys for SALC offices are issued by the School Operations Team. House Services Team also maintain separate sets of keys for emergency access and maintenance purposes. Keycodes can also be obtained from the School Operations Team.

Meeting and teaching rooms

Meeting and teaching rooms are available in various buildings across the campus. Most of these rooms are managed by Central Teaching Spaces, the team that manages and books the central teaching and meeting rooms and other spaces at the University. CTS rooms can be booked by emailing CTS@manchester.ac.uk.

The School manages a small number of meeting rooms across our buildings in SALC. These rooms can be booked using ResourceBooker. Rooms A4 in Samuel Alexander Building and C1.18 in Ellen Wilkinson Building can be booked by emailing SALC_SO_Roombooking@manchester.ac.uk.

Kitchens

Samuel Alexander Building has varying sizes of kitchens in rooms. Please note that these kitchens are shared facilities, and we encourage colleagues to use them respectfully:

Cleaning of kitchen areas are the responsibility of the staff and students who use them. Please wash your own cups, plates, etc, and leave the kitchen as clean as you found it.

Waste and recycling bins have been provided close to all kitchen areas. Dish-washing liquid and sponges are regularly replenished by the School.

SafeZone App, Out of Hours Working

SafeZone is our free security mobile app designed to help keep our community safe across the campus. SafeZone helps you contact Security, ask for first aid and other emergency help with just one tap. It is free to download and easy to use. Visit Google Play or the App Store and search 'SafeZone' to download.

If you witness any suspicious activity, please report this immediately to the University Security Service on extension 69966 /0161 3069966. This number is also on the back of your ID card.

Please be vigilant when working out of office hours; if someone tailgates you into the building please ask to see staff/ student card. If they refuse, please call Security at the earliest possible opportunity.

Staff are required to read and adapt as necessary our Lone Working Risk Assessment template to mitigate against any potential hazards or risks that may arise during periods of working alone.

Reporting building faults and issues

Please report these issues directly to estates@manchester.ac.uk or by calling 0161 275 2424 or extension 52424 on campus. Estates Helpdesk is open Monday to Friday 8am-4pm.

In case of emergency and outside these times you should report any problems to the Security Office on extension 52728 or on 01613069966 or use the SafeZone App.

Children on campus and safeguarding

Please be aware that it is not possible to bring children to work with you. The University’s Safeguarding Children policy prohibits this. If, under exceptional circumstances, children are brought in, they must be closely accompanied and supervised at all times. Please see the School Health and Safety Policy for further information.

The University is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our community, in particular, the safeguarding of children and adults at risk within the University community, apprentices, and those who visit and otherwise engage with the University. Please see Safeguarding Training and Policy documents for further information.

Assistance dogs on campus

Assistance dogs play an essential role in helping their owners/handlers with day to day life, and include dogs for various disabilities or long term health problems, such as seizures or hearing problems, not just those with visual problems. SALC follows University Safety Services’ guidance on roles and responsibilities of the handlers/owners and risk management.

Ordinary pets must not be brought onto campus or into the School buildings.

Furniture4Reuse

There is a wide range of both free and paid furniture available at the Universities Furniture4Reuse site.

They are located in the Simon Building (building 59) in room B.31. Please click here for directions. Opening times are 12pm-3pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
