Beyond Patient Involvement
Watch the film and hear the Optimising Access Through Human Fit (OATH) project team discuss how Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) intersects with participatory research (or doesn't).
Some of our researchers told us support for health-oriented approaches, such as Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) crowded out opportunities to discuss wider participatory research practices. We've been exploring the relationship between PPIE and other practices and synergies as well as areas of divergence.

The Optimising Access Through Human fit (OATH) project
For The Optimising Access Through Human fit project, researchers from The University of Manchester worked with patients and general practice (GP)staff to create resources that can help people think about access to GP services in a different way.
Watch a film about the project and find out more about the research on the OATH website.

Publications and resources
- OATH resource set - infographics and animations about the OATH project and access to general practice.
- The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has an extensive range of resources on both PPIE and co-production, reflecting an opening up of approaches.
- The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Greater Manchester has also moved towards a more inclusive and co-productive approach.
- The Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health has a PPIE toolkit and extensive resources on PPIE.
- The PPIE Forum has co-created a Quality Mark to help self-assess and ultimately improve the quality of PPIE in research projects. Dr Hawys Williams (Social Responsibility and Public Engagement Manager) and Samantha Franklin (Social Responsibility Project Officer) were awarded an Open Research Fellowship to evaluate this and test its acceptability. These slides from their Open Research Conference presentation, 'Acceptance and evaluation of a co-produced Quality Mark for Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) research' include more details about the project.
