Manager Essentials
Resources for managing your team
Starting the employee journey
Key focus: recruitment, onboarding, and induction
- Recruitment: Resources can be found on how to use the JobTrain platform to create a vacancy, obtain approvals, advertise and offer roles to candidates. Guidelines for fair and compliant hiring processes and creating job descriptions are also included.
- Recruitment responsibilities: Managers must complete mandatory training before taking part in any recruitment panel or promotion committee.
- Managing at Manchester: This Talent Development team designed programme empowers managers to understand leadership styles, develop management strategies and set clear directions within their teams.
- Equality, diversity, and inclusion: Managers must make sure they foster a respectful and inclusive work environment where all employees feel valued and respected. This is also a part of the mandatory pre-recruitment training.
- Pre-employment checks: Steps should be followed to verify the qualifications, references, and compliance requirements of any new staff.
- Immigration checks: Guidelines for recruitment of international staff and right to work checks can be found here. Managers must make sure right to work checks are completed on or before the first day of employment. Compliance of immigration laws is a legal obligation under UK immigration regulations to verify that all employees have the right to work in the UK.
- IT setup and ordering a laptop: Making sure your new starter has the right IT equipment and access from day one is crucial for a smooth onboarding experience.
- Induction for your new starter: This page provides you with information to help your new starter settle into life here at our University as well as essential training that needs to be completed. Resources can also be shared with new staff to help them with basics for their new role.
- Probation: The probationary period is an essential phase for both employees and managers to assess fit, performance, and alignment with the University’s expectations. Bitesize guide on probation can also be found for managers.
- Health and safety: Managers play a key role in promoting workplace health and safety. Making sure staff are following safety policies, completing regular training, and having open communication about hazards is vital.
- New joiners survey: The survey is sent to colleagues after their first eight weeks of employment, asking a range of questions about the recruitment and selection experience, reasons for joining our University and their welcome and induction experience. Managers should encourage their new starter to complete the survey.
