New Starters Induction
Welcome to The University of Manchester. You’re joining an amazing community of colleagues all contributing to our University vision: to be recognised globally for the excellence of our people, research, learning and innovation, and for the benefits we bring to society and the environment.
This page provides you with information to help you settle into life here at our University.
You will already have received our University Welcome Guide with your contract email. This gives you lots of useful information to help you in your first few weeks. Don’t worry if you can’t find this, the link is in the box below. If you’re joining one of our Faculties, there are links to their Welcome Guides on this page too.
When you start your new role, your line manager will arrange your induction programme. This is designed to help you get to know your colleagues, where you’ll be working and give you more information about your role, responsibilities and objectives.

Induction to The University of Manchester
As a new colleague you're also invited to book on to:
- The University Welcome Event: A short, informal session where you will meet other new colleagues and find out more about what our University does and what it’s like to work here. You’ll also find out about our wellbeing support and benefits on offer to all colleagues, and there will be time to ask any questions you may have.
- Induction leaflet: This handy sized leaflet is full of useful information to help colleagues get started during their first couple of weeks with us. It is shared at the University Welcome Event and is also available at the P&OD reception desk on the 2nd Floor of the Simon Building.
- Campus tour: You can book a place on a walking tour of the campus where you’ll also learn more about our University’s history, heritage and achievements over the past 200 years.
- Essential courses for all new staff: a suite of eight courses including Health and Safety, Fire Awareness for All, Office Safety, Data Protection and Cyber Security, Diversity in the Workplace, Unconscious Bias and Disability Equity. All new colleagues must complete these courses, regardless of role or position. After you have completed each course, your Training Record will be updated within 72 hours. After completing all eight courses, you will receive a certificate of completion. These courses complement the in-person local H&S induction carried out by the manager or local safety advisor.
- Joiners survey: We are keen to hear about your joining experience so you’ll be sent a short survey asking for your feedback around your eight week of working here. The survey link is unique to you and will be sent by our survey partners The People Experience Hub, from the email address surveys@pxemails.com You can be assured this is a legitimate survey being run on our University’s behalf. Your responses will be treated confidentially and will help us to improve the joining experience for all colleagues. Find out more about our joiners survey.
If you are new to the higher education sector, you may also find the course An Introduction to Higher Education useful - it is a great place to start to gain some background knowledge if you are new to the sector or would like to brush up on your knowledge. This course is not tracked and will not show on your learner record.
If you are a newly appointed academic colleague, you will also need to complete the New Academics Programme. Further details can be found in each of the faculty websites.
All colleagues are offered the opportunity to have a Professional & Development Review (P&DR) each year. It is an opportunity to reflect on the past year and look to the future, mapping your objectives to University goals and considering development opportunities which you may require to assist you achieving them. More information on the P&DR process can be found on the website.
