Purple Pennies

Purple Pennies

Small change. Big difference.

Purple Pennies is a micro-donation scheme where you can donate the pennies from your salary towards three charitable causes voted for by all our employees. With the scheme, your salary will be rounded down to the nearest pound, meaning you will never donate more than 99p a month. So if you earn £1,800.23, only 23p will be added to the Purple Pennies funds.

The causes selected by university colleagues were: Wood Street Mission, Re-write Cancer and Supporting Manchester Students.

Sign up now

Go to the Purple Pennies sign up page. It only takes 20 seconds!

To sign up you will need to provide your full name and your staff ID number (on the front of your staff ID card) and NI number.

Any sign ups between the 1st and 31st of a month will be actioned in your salary in the following month. The Purple Pennies donations will be automatically made each month from your pay - you can cancel any time via MyView. Donations are always less than 99p and Gift Aid can be claimed on the total donations each year, adding an additional 25% support to these charities at no cost to you.

The three charitable causes that will receive your Purple Pennies

The three charitable causes that equally share the Purple Pennies pot are:

  1. Wood Street Mission: Wood Street Mission is a children’s charity helping children and families living on a low income in Manchester and Salford. We provide practical help to help meet children’s day-to-day needs and improve their life chances.
  2. Re-write Cancer: Your support will help complete a brand new cancer centre in Manchester, so our scientists can move in as soon as possible. And, once it’s open, you’ll support the amazing research that takes place there.
  3. Supporting Manchester students: By supporting Manchester students, you’ll help increase the financial support available to them. You'll fund scholarships and access programmes, helping talented people join us here. And you’ll make sure more students can access hardship support when they need it most.

Making a collective impact

The University of Manchester is one of the largest employers in Manchester, this means there is an opportunity to make a big collective difference by taking part in Purple Pennies. If all 12,000 University staff take part, then Purple Pennies will be worth £72,000 to the chosen causes each year – that’s an incredible £24,000 per cause.

Together we can make a big difference to good causes when they need it most!
