Purple Giving
The University enables you to donate to charities via your salary in two different ways. There are also opportunities to take part in volunteering activities.
Purple Pennies
Purple Pennies is a scheme that enables you to donate the pennies from your salary, towards three local charitable causes voted for by our staffing community. With the scheme, your salary will be rounded down to the nearest pound, meaning you will never donate more than 99p a month. The current beneficiaries of Purple Pennies are Wood Street Mission, Rewrite Cancer and Supporting Manchester Students. These were voted for by university employees.
Purple Pounds - our payroll giving scheme
Purple Pounds is our nationally commended Payroll Giving Scheme which enables you to donate to any UK registered charity on a regular or one-off basis, by automatic deductions from your monthly pay. Not only is Purple Pounds simple, but it's also tax effective. This is because your donation is made before tax is deducted from your pay. For example, if you donate £5, the take-home cost to standard taxpayers is just £4. And if you’re a higher-rate taxpayer, you’ll save even more.
Employee Volunteering
The University's Employee Volunteering policy provides all employees with up to three days paid leave per holiday year (October to September) to support a charitable cause of their choosing.
There are a range of activities that employees can get involved in, whether it's a university related activity e.g. volunteering with one of the university's Cultural Institutions, or volunteering with an external organisation which may be more suited to an employee's interests.
Employees must ensure that their chosen activity complements one or more of the priorities outlined in the university's social responsibility and civic engagement plan.
