Adapting

Adapting the Framework

There are many activities that would benefit from a project management approach but do not have the scope that requires that the full lifecycle and toolset be employed. Projects are by definition a structured approach to delivery so you should always follow the same core stages; however you could consider making the following changes:

1.Scoping and Define Stages

It could be possible to combine these stages and produce a single edited business case document. This should be useful to explain to your stakeholders:

  • The objectives of your project and what benefits you expect to accrue.
  • The scope and timescales of the project.
  • Details of any costs that may be incurred.
  • An outline plan for your project.

2.Design and Plan

A full Project Implementation Document may not be necessary; however it is still valuable to complete an activity plan and also to consider the stakeholders that might have an interest or influence on your project. If there are a sufficient number of stakeholders then a communications plan might be appropriate. Management of Risks and Issues is also an important aspect of Project Management.

3.Implementation

The implementation will be based largely on the information that you have developed in the previous stage. During this stage you will need to report to your sponsor and could use the Status Report during this stage.

4.Review and Close

If your project was approved by a sponsor then completing a project closure report will help structure the feedback on the achievements and learning of the project. If your project is transitioning to ‘business as usual’ then you will need to set up review points in the future to ensure that service delivery is as planned, and that transfer of ownership has taken place.
