What is Leading at Manchester?
Leading at Manchester is a 6-month programme for experienced managers and senior specialists looking to develop their leadership capability in their role at the University of Manchester. The audience for this programme may include, but not be limited to:
- Established managers who lead academics, senior technical professionals and other managers
- Academics, researchers and senior professionals required to influence and deliver results through others
Suggested roles of delegates may include, but is not limited to:
- Academic Chairs
- People and Organisational Development Partners
- Principle Investigators and Senior Researchers
- Project Managers
- Senior Lecturers
- Teaching, Learning and Research Support Specialists
- Those in roles which require the need to influence without authority
The programme focuses on developing leadership capability and gaining the skills individuals need to succeed in a wide range of leadership roles. This practical and comprehensive programme aims to enhance leadership capability to influence and deliver results through others.
By using a range of content including leadership theory, case studies, practical exercises, and group discussions, participants will work with a group of their peers on the programme to develop their role as a leader at the University. Activities have been designed to allow the translation of principles from the programme to day to day activity.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
- Define and establish personal leadership style and identify how best to apply and adapt approaches to influence and connect with others
- Shape and communicate local strategy to achieve organisational alignment and build engagement to deliver for the University
- Build and maintain an environment that enables others to perform to their potential
- Establish leadership strategies and practice to support and maintain commitment of others through change
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, improvement and agility
Completing the programme
The programme comprises of a number of elements to provide varied learning opportunities over the 6-month period:
- Four facilitated virtual workshops
- A launch and impact event
- Self-directed learning
- Opportunity for 1:1 coaching
- A group project connected to the University priorities. At the end of the programme project groups present back to a panel of senior stakeholders.
