Get involved in development and delivery of new NHS leadership programmes

MBS will play a key role in the delivery of the new programmes and is running engagement events for staff from across the School and the University, led by Professor Naomi Chambers, on 11, 18 and 24 April.

NHS Leadership Academy

Leadership for the enhancement of patient-centred care, for improvement in services and for the effective orchestration of the healthcare system

Colleagues may be aware that Manchester Business School is playing a key role in the delivery of two new programmes for the NHS Leadership Academy - the largest and most comprehensive approach to leadership development ever undertaken in the NHS, which will benefit up to 25,000 NHS staff.

With our partners KPMG and the University of Birmingham, we are currently designing two programmes:

Mid-level leadership programme

  • The programme aims to develop those in entry level leadership roles to assume broader leadership responsibilities and move into middle management/mid level leadership. It is aimed at leaders who are aspiring for a role that is third in line to a statutory accountable officer level and/or is a role leading people who themselves lead teams, projects or services.

Senior-level programme

  • This programme is aimed at leaders who are aspiring for a role that has executive level accountability and is at, or reports to, a statutory accountable officer level or is a recognised senior national or system wide role. The NHS leaders aspiring to this level have demonstrated the skills, knowledge and behaviour to lead organisations, systems or national portfolios.
        
    This initiative aims to produce a cadre of high value managers in the NHS who are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours, before they start in their new roles. The programme will create confident leaders who shape the conditions in which front-line staff deliver good quality, patient-centred, co-ordinated, cost-effective care.  It will result in a strengthened organisational climate of ethical leadership that is founded on knowledge, skills and behaviours to do the right thing, and to know when bad things are happening and to have the strength and capability to stop them.

These are ambitious programmes at large scale with a challenging timescale. In the first year, the service leaders/middle manager programme will recruit 1000 students and the senior leaders programme will recruit 300, with rolling enrolment from September 2013.

We are keen to involve as many colleagues as possible from across the School and the University in shaping the design and content of these programmes and in their delivery, and are running engagement events to let you know more about the programme and how you can get involved.

Lunchtime events will take place on the following dates:

  • Thursday 11 April (12-2pm) in 10.05, Harold Hankins Building
  • Thursday 18 April (12-2pm) in 10.05, Harold Hankins Building
  • Wednesday 24 April (12-2pm) in 1.34.1, MBS West
