University celebrates Wonders of Life

28 Feb 2013

The University celebrated its part in the latest BBC science series The Wonders of Life with a special screening for staff, students, alumni and 50 A-level students on the University’s Manchester Access Programme.

Matthew Cobb and Brian Cox answer questions

The hit show – watched by more than 4 million people per episode and a top hit on iPlayer – was presented by Professor Brian Cox, with colleagues from the Faculty of Life Sciences supporting much of the content of the programmes and UoM alumnus and BBC Head of science Andrew Cohen as series producer.

The evening began with a drinks reception at the Manchester Museum where, in the shadow of Stan the T-Rex, President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, Dean and Vice-President of FLS Professor Martin Humphries and Brian welcomed over 100 specially invited guests who had travelled from far and wide for the event.

Following the reception, guests were invited to watch a screening of one of the programmes in University Place where they were joined by a further 400 guests including current students, alumni, staff and 50 A-level students from local colleges from the University’s Manchester Access Programme.

Following the screening, a lively and entertaining question and answer session with Brian and one of the series’ consultants Professor Matthew Cobb from FLS proved extremely popular.

The audience quizzed the pair on subjects as diverse as the evolution of speciation and possibilities for the basis of life on other planets. Brian and Matthew also gave their views on collaborations between the different sciences and offered advice to budding scientists of the future.
