Manchester students show bags of support

02 Jan 2013

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) Shops' partnership with the University and MMU encouraging students to donate unwanted things has proved to be a huge success, raising over an estimated £50,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

BHF Shops collection

Last Spring BHF Shops launched a new scheme working with the students of Manchester to encourage them to have a clear out and donate their lovely unwanted things at the end of the academic year, enabling them to recycle goods that might otherwise be wasted. Throughout the scheme students were incredibly supportive and made full use of the donation drop off points.

The successful partnership has seen over 3,500 bags of lovely things donated to the BHF collection bins located around the University campuses, generating a total of approximately £50,000 for the nation’s heart charity’s network of over 700 Shops. 100% of the profits will go towards helping to fund the fight against the nation’s biggest killer, heart disease.

Due to its success, the campaign will be rolled out for a second time throughout the Manchester area, aimed at students who will be clearing out their student accommodation at the end of term and throughout the year.

Catherine Argyle, BHF Regional Stock Generator, said: “The response from the students of Manchester has been fantastic. Each BHF Shop needs to receive 400 bags of unwanted items a week to continue our lifesaving work and thanks to generous donations from the students and staff of the University and MMU, we have been able to help our Shops in the Greater Manchester area.

We are encouraging any other Universities or businesses that are interested in working with the BHF Shops and providing collection facilities to get in touch by calling 0777 5027325  or emailing argylec@bhf.org.uk.”

BHF North East Shops are always in need of donations and it doesn’t have to be just clothes - good quality shoes, CDs, DVDs, books, toys and small electricals are all welcome.

Helen McGlashan, Director of Residential Services, said: “We wanted to work with BHF Shops to provide this convenient new service to encourage students to donate unwanted items to this great cause rather than throw them out. We are delighted that this collaboration has proved to be such a success and hope the service continues to be used, helping us to raise vital funds to continue the BHF’s life saving work.”
