Honorary Degree for Chief Medical Officer

The Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Dame Sally Davies, will receive an honorary degree from The University of Manchester on Friday.

Dame Sally, who also advises the UK Government, holds responsibility for Research and Development, and is the Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health.

The Chief Medical Officer supports the Health Secretary in strengthening the Government’s collective effort to protect, promote and improve the health and wellbeing of the people of England.

Dame Sally, who graduated from Manchester as a medical doctor in 1972, has been actively involved in NHS Research and Development from its establishment.

As Director-General she established the National Institute for Health Research with a budget of £1 billion. Her own research interests focused on Sickle Cell disease.

Sally Davies was awarded a DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire) in 2009 for outstanding services to medicine.
